Patricia Manley
Link Patricia Manley was recently elected to the Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education.   Link Manley brings over 30 years of experience as an Ann Arbor public school teacher and administrator to this important role.  Link Manley will begin her three-year term in January 2015.

Dr. Nora Martin
Dr. Nora Martin and her husband Dr. Lee Martin celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 16, 2014 during a re-dedication ceremony at Eastern Michigan University (“EMU”) where they met as undergraduate students.  Both Drs. Martin received their BS degrees and MA degrees from EMU; and their Ph.Ds. in Educational Psychology from the University of Michigan.  Link Nora served as Professor in the Special Education Department at EMU for 37 years.  She is now a Professor Emeritus at EMU.

Dr. Paula Allen-Meares
In September 2014, the Barack Obama Foundation announced that the University of Illinois at Chicago (“UIC”) was one of four finalists in the competition to be the host of the Obama Presidential Library.  In a press release issued by UIC, Chancellor Allen-Meares responded to the news by pointing out that “As Chicago’s only public research university and one of the most diverse campuses in the nation, UIC is the ideal institution to host the Obama Presidential Library and Museum, and we are honored to be selected to participate in the next phase of this process.”

Maria Thompson
Link Maria Thompson was honored by the 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit, Inc. and the New York City-based Women’s Presidents’ Organization with the 2014 Women of Color Achievement Award on October 29, 2014 in Southfield, Michigan.   According to the press release issued by the organizations, “the selected honorees successfully operated a woman-owned or led business that has reached annual revenues of at least $2 million for product-based businesses or $1 million for service-based businesses.  These types of companies have provided an increase in employment opportunities on a local, regional and national level and have significantly strengthened the U.S. economy.”   Link Maria was recognized for her leadership of Arsenal Venture Partners.

Dr. Chanel DeGuzman, a program manager for the Student Counseling & Programming Office at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, was a recipient of the University of Michigan’s 2013 Distinguished Diversity Leadership Award.  The Distinguished Diversity Leaders Award was established to shine a light on those staff members who work toward achieving a welcoming, supportive and inclusive working environment and for their extraordinary commitment and dedication to diversity at the University of Michigan.  The DDLA award was presented on December 3, 2013.

Stefani Carter was elected to the Washtenaw Community College Foundation Board of Directors effective July 1, 2013.   She will serve a three-year term.  Ms. Carter is a semi-retired attorney who is in private practice.

Dr. Bonita Neighbors

The Church of the Good Shepherd in Ann Arbor honored Dr. Bonita Neighbors on January 19, 2014 as the recipient of the church’s annual Martin Luther King Community Service Award. The Martin Luther King Community Service Award has been bestowed annually by the Church of the Good Shepherd for the past 25 years. It is entitled an "Award for Servant Leadership in Building a Beloved and Just Community (in the Way of Dr. M. L. King, Jr.)." Dr. Neighbors was selected for working to improve the quality of dental care to inmates in the Michigan Department of Corrections for 23 years as the Director of Dental Health; and for serving as Director and Staff Dentist of the University of Michigan Dental School’s Community Dental Center in Ann Arbor. During her tenure at the Community Dental Center, Dr. Neighbors has expanded services and offered discounted and free care to the underserved in  Washtenaw County.

Carolyn Cole-Brown was awarded the Audrey Lucas Spirit Award for 2009-2010 from the University of Michigan Health System Human Resources Department and was an honorable mention finalist for the 2011 Administrator of the Year at the University of Michigan Medical School.  Ms. Carolyn Cole-Brown is the Chief Department Administrator for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Patricia Horne McGee is the 2012 recipient of the Kappa Alpha Psi Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti-Inkster Alumni Chapter’s Women of Achievement Award.  She was also awarded the Excellence in Education Award at the annual Brotherhood Banquet sponsored by Brown Chapel AME of Ann Arbor.   The Parkridge Summer Festival presented Mrs. McGee with a plaque in recognition of her thirteen years of serving the children of Parkridge Community and Washtenaw County as Head Start Director.   Mrs. McGee served as the Executive Director of Early Childhood Programs and Head Start for Washtenaw County, Michigan  before her retirement.

Toni Rodgers  received the 2012 Business Award from the Ann Arbor club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club, Inc.  Ms. Rodgers is the co-owner of several McDonald’s franchises in Washtenaw County, Vice President of the Southeast Michigan McDonald’s Owners Association and member of the Board of Directors of the Ann Arbor State Bank.

 

Laurita Thomas was the recipient of the Kappa Alpha Psi Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti-Inkster Alumni Chapter’s Women of Achievement Award in 2011.  Ideas America selected Ms. Thomas for its Executive Leadership Award in 2011 in recognition of her leadership in creating the Voices of the Staff Program at the University of Michigan.   Ms. Thomas is currently the Associate Vice President and Chief Human Resource Officer for The University of Michigan.

Ms. Leitia Byrd and Dr. Joetta Mial

The Dispute Resolution Center of Ann Arbor recognized Ms. Leitia Byrd and Dr. Joetta Mial as its 2013 Cornerstone of the Community honorees.
